MWC Shanghai 2026 Observation: 6G and Satellite Networking Cost Reduction Period
Blue Whale News, June 27 Recently, MWC Shanghai 2026 opened as scheduled. Unlike last year's warm atmosphere of intensive 5G-A commercial orders landing, this year's exhibition hall was filled with a cautious sense of pragmatism: the '6G Industry Ecosystem Zone' and 'Future Constellation' satellite special zone, set up independently for the first time, were popular, but the industry was more keen on deducing 'when technology can turn into actual money'.
In the 6G direction, the three major paths of integrated sensing and communication, AI-native, and air-space-ground integration are indisputable, with chip makers even starting pre-research stocking in advance; in the satellite internet field, the 'land grab' for orbital frequencies is basically over, with large-scale networking and cost reduction becoming the new theme. However, consensus stops at the technical level: terminal makers and investment institutions are generally on the sidelines, with the former waiting for killer applications and the latter unable to calculate return cycles. Even international satellite players that have achieved profitability are struggling in the early cultivation of the consumer market.
When the financial account for 5G investment has not yet been fully settled, 6G and satellite internet are collectively entering a transition period where 'vision is clear, but realization is difficult'. The technical route is narrowing, but the commercial outlet is widening. Under realistic investment return constraints, the industry needs a more pragmatic answer than 'grand narratives'.
6G Technology Paths Converge, Business Closed Loop Still Being Explored
Entering the 6G Industry Ecosystem Exhibition Zone in Hall N3 of MWC Shanghai, five major sections—the Beijing 6G Lab general area, communication enhancement, integrated sensing and communication, integrated computing and intelligence, and air-space-ground integration—clearly break down the core technical vision of 6G. On-site staff told Blue Whale Technology reporters that this is the first time MWC Shanghai has set up a separate hall for 6G, sending a clear industry signal: 6G has moved from concept discussion to the key stage of system verification.
'If last year everyone was still debating what 6G should do, this year the debate is already about how to do it and what trade-offs to make,' a technician from the Beijing 6G Lab general area told reporters. Currently, the three enhancement paths of integrated sensing and communication, AI-native, and air-space-ground integration have basically formed industry consensus, and key technologies like terahertz communication and intelligent metasurfaces have entered prototype verification stages.
The pace of layout in the upstream part of the industrial chain is clearly accelerating. At this exhibition, Qualcomm demonstrated an end-to-end 6G prototype system, GalaxySpace publicly displayed its second-generation phone-direct phased array antenna for the first time in the 6G Industry Ecosystem Zone, and vivo showcased its 6G pre-research prototype and technical roadmap. It is understood that, unlike Xiaomi's focus on underlying transmission algorithms and OPPO's focus on communication paradigm innovation, vivo's exhibition direction leans more toward end-to-end systems and application implementation—its complete 6G test system includes MR terminals, 6G user equipment (UE) prototypes, 6G base stations (RAN), and core networks, covering the full chain.
The on-site representative of a domestic chip maker told reporters that the company's internal 6G pre-research team size has doubled compared to last year, with clear logic behind it: 'If you wait until the standard is frozen to start, it's too late. You must do technical reserves first.'
However, compared to the enthusiasm of upstream companies, terminal makers are relatively cautious. Blue Whale Technology reporters asked several mobile phone brands about their 6G terminal plans in the 6G zone, and most responses were 'actively monitoring', with few consumer-grade product demonstrations for 6G on the booths. A 6G pre-research director from one of the world's top five mobile phone makers said in an informal exchange that it is still difficult to produce a clear commercial roadmap for 6G phones, with the core reason not being insufficient technical capability but the need to study the conversion path from user demands to application scenarios. In his view, the experiential dividends of 5G have not yet been fully released, and the immersive holography and multi-sensory scenarios envisioned for 6G are still some distance from the mass consumer market.
The investment community is also cautious. Blue Whale Technology reporters met an early-stage investor focused on the TMT sector between exhibition sessions. After watching multiple demonstrations in the 6G zone, he said that while the technology is impressive in its direction, from an investment perspective, the capital returns of 5G are still being digested, and the subsequent R&D and network deployment for 6G require enormous investment, with exit cycles and return expectations currently lacking sufficient data support. He admitted that the current stage is more about keeping track and observing, and the timing for action still needs clearer commercial signals.
'Future Constellation': Structure Initially Set, Profit Path Yet to Be Verified
Unlike the atmosphere in the 6G zone, which focuses on key technology verification, the newly established 'Future Constellation' satellite industry zone presents a different industrial rhythm—the orbital structure has taken initial shape, and participants are entering a stage of intensive resource and cost management.
Domestic low-orbit broadband and narrowband constellation operators such as Geespace, Guodian Gaoke, and Yuanxin Satellite, along with international players like Iridium, set up sizable booths. Geespace demonstrated real low-orbit satellite internet terminal equipment for scenarios like ocean-going ships and desert mining areas; Guodian Gaoke highlighted the Tianqi constellation's application cases in the IoT field; Yuanxin Satellite's engineers even made a live connection, playing a video call test relying on the 'Qianfan Constellation'.
'The scramble for orbital and frequency resources in satellite internet has come to an end; the current key lies in large-scale deployment and cost control,' a field representative from Guodian Gaoke told Blue Whale Technology reporters. He revealed that the batch production cost of the company's narrowband communication payloads is continuously decreasing, but also noted that the user scale of satellite internet services has not yet reached the break-even point, meaning government and industry orders will remain the basic revenue support for at least a few more years.
In the process of forming a profit model, terminal cost is a noteworthy part. Blue Whale Technology reporters exchanged views on the material cost of satellite communication terminals with representatives from antenna and module manufacturers. Respondents generally said that costs are rapidly decreasing and are already capable of being integrated into mainstream phone designs, but most manufacturers did not disclose specific figures regarding exact costs.
A business manager at the Iridium booth told reporters that Iridium, relying on narrowband voice and low-speed data services, has achieved positive cash flow, but the traditional market space is becoming saturated, and next-step growth needs to expand into IoT and emergency communications. Meanwhile, domestic low-orbit broadband constellations are still in a catch-up phase prioritizing scale, and achieving break-even will require time and user accumulation.
